Borough Academy celebrates building completion for temporary school
Staff, project partners and guests came together to celebrate the opening of Borough Academy’s temporary site with a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception on Wednesday 3rd September.
For its first year the Academy will be housed in a purpose-built temporary building on Sawyer Street. It was built using state-of-the-art modular construction techniques, which gives this temporary facility the same quality as a permanent building. Meanwhile the conversion of the fire station to provide the school’s permanent home is well underway and the first parts will be ready for the second cohort of pupils in September 2020.
Principal Declan Jones said:
We are absolutely thrilled to be in our new school and ready to welcome the first Borough Academy students at the end of this week. Whilst temporary, these buildings have been bespokely created to ensure our students receive the best possible opportunities to learn and thrive in a stimulating and safe environment.
Mr Bruce Powell, who has worked with the Federation for many years as Chair of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation and has held the prestigious role of Past Master of the Haberdashers’ Company cut the ribbon to formally mark the opening of Borough Academy’s temporary school buildings. He said:
It is a great privilege to be opening a new Haberdashers secondary school in Southwark. It is a tribute to the joint efforts of the local community, the DfE, Southwark Council, the developer Hadston Southwark Limited and the team at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation that this lengthy and complex project has achieved its first major milestone, with the expected arrival on 6th September of 180 young students, who we very much hope will benefit significantly from a Haberdashers education.
Borough Academy is located on the site of the old Southwark Fire Station, Borough Academy will be a 900-place secondary school serving the communities of Southwark and Lambeth. The Academy is the ninth school to join the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation.
