Homework & VLE
FAQ's
Why is homework important?
Research shows that in schools where homework is completed properly over time students are approximately 5 months ahead of their peers across the country. When digital technology is used it increases to 6 months. The purpose of homework is to embed the learning taken place in class and develop students independent study skills.
How much homework should I expect my child to have per week?
All students should have between 4-5 hours of homework a week. Depending on the subjects they are studying that half term.
Core subject should be approximately an hour long
Selected options and creative subjects should have about 20 minutes.
How do I check if my child has homework?
You child should be writing all their homework in their student planners. You can also log on to each of the homework platforms to check how much of their homework has been completed.
What if my child is struggling with their homework?
If your child is struggling to complete their homework, each platform has capabilities to support students in the first instance. This may be in the form of videos or information pages, but they can also use the notes in their exercise books for support.
We have a number of sessions on the school site that students can attend. They will either be in the library or computer rooms. The time for these sessions vary and have been outlined below.
You can also communicate with the class teacher for more directed support.
What happens if my child does not complete their homework?
If your child doesn’t complete their homework they will be issued with a sanction followed by an email to parents reflecting this. They will be expected to attend a detention that day and have completed the homework by the next day.
Should this be a persistent issue the school will make contact with the parents to discuss how we can support the completion of homework moving forward.
What if my child loses their password?
All homework platforms used by Borough academy will have single sign on activated. This means students should only need their teams password to access all of the sites (Logging on for the first time may be different). If your student loses or forgets their password they will need to have it reset by the IT department. They can do this by either:
- Speaking to their form tutor before school
- Speaking to their subject teachers
- Parents can email reception.
- Ask the teacher in the study area at lunch.
If a student asks for a password reset they are encouraged to chase it up with the teacher they have requested it from as members of staff will not search for students. Students are encouraged to complete their homework early so any issues can be dealt with in a timely manner in order for them to not miss the deadline.
What extra work is available?
All the homework platforms have provisions for independent study, please contact the class teacher to learn more about these.
